Prenatal testing is designed to detect genetic disorders. This can be helpful in cases where physical problems can be medically resolved before birth, improving your baby’s chances of survival.
However, some tests (such as amniocentesis) carry risks of damage to mother and baby. Other screening tests may indicate problems where there are none, or reveal problems for which there is no medical solution, leading to untold worry.
Before agreeing to any procedure, we encourage you to investigate the prenatal tests which have been recommended, their accuracy, purpose and side effects.
